Aperture - In Depth
Aperture is one of the most influential elements of photography, it can make or break a photo. The word aperture relates to the size the shutter within your camera lens opens when you take a photograph. A large or wide aperture is when the lens shutter is open wide or fully, a lot of light is let in with large apertures. A small aperture is when the lens shutter is very small in size and only very little light can pass through. Number wise of your cameras display, a Large aperture is represented by a low number such as f2.8 and a Small aperture is represented by a high number such as f16. Different aperture settings mean different aperture sizes on different lenses and cameras, for example, an aperture of f5 on a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera is much wider than an aperture of f5 on a small compact camera and visa versa. Not all cameras have the ability to allow modifications of the aperture size manually, to check if you camera does, look on the mode dial, if the letters M, A (Not auto mode, A and Auto are very different modes), Av or any similar variations of these letters, unless the A on your dial stands for auto mode (refer to manual), will mean you can manually change your camera's lens aperture size. To understand the effects of changing the aperture size and how it affects your photos depth of field, please read my tutorial on Depth of Field. |
