Camera Shutter Speed Explained
Shutter speed is basically how fast your camera's shutter opens and closes when you press the shutter button. A shutter speed faster than one second is represented on a camera's LCD as 1/xxxx where xxxx is the speed in milliseconds, the 1 stands for 1 second, for example 1/125 means 125th of a second. A shutter speed longer than one second is represented on a camera's LCD as x"y whereas x stands for seconds and y stands for fractions of a second, for example 5"3 means 5.3 seconds. When a photographer comes across a moving subject they have two options. Number one is to use a very fast shutter speed in order to freeze the movement. Option two is to use a slow shutter speed in order to create a sense of movement within the photograph. The minimum shutter speed I recommend you use when you are not using a tripod is 1/60, if you have image stabilisation then you should be ok with 1/25-1/50 depending on the quality of the image stabilisation system, personally I find Canon's image stabilisation to be the best.
