Depth of Field - What is it and how it effects your photographs.

This article will explain about depth of field a basic understanding of aperture is needed before reading this, it will not explain about what aperture is, I have written another piece of intel named 'Aperture - In Depth' in order to explain that.

Depth of field is a powerful tool when used properly, and any aspiring photography should know how to use it efficiently when taking photos. It is like swimming, once you have learnt the basics you must practice often to become good at it.

Basically, Depth of Field is how much, and what parts of your photo are in and out of focus or what parts are blurry and what parts are sharp and crisp.

A large aperture will keep very little in your photograph in focus, the subject you focus on will be sharp and the subjects in front or behind the subject you focus on will be slightly or greatly out of focus, depending on how large/wide your aperture is. A large/wide aperture is good for portraits and macro photography, as it keeps the subject in focus and cancels out any background distractions as the human eye is naturally drawn to sharp objects as apposed to blurry ones. To use a large/wide aperture set your aperture number on your camera's LCD low, around 1.4-5.6

A small aperture will keep a much greater percentage of the photograph in focus, this is good for landscapes (unless going for arty, or special effects). To use a small aperture keep the aperture value on your LCD high, such as 16-36 (your aperture range will very depending on your camera model and lens, if using an Single Lens Reflex camera).

Now you know the basics, so go out there, practice, experiment and above all, create some fantastic photographs!

Good Luck
