How to create a HDR photograph
A High Dynamic Range (HDR) photograph is a photo that has high detail in all areas, shadows, midtones and highlights. What you will need to create a HDR photograph: A camera with fully manual functions (preferably a DSLR) A sturdy Tripod Adobe Photoshop/HDRsoft Photomatix Pro Method: Step 1. Find a nice subject (HDR images work best on landscapes) and set your camera down securely on your tripod. Step 2. Switch your camera to Aperture priority mode, choose a desired aperture and switch your metering mode to spot metering aim your Auto Focus (AF) point at the brightest part of your image, your camera will work out the best shutter speed, note this down or remember it, if you can. Point your camera to a suitable midtone in your image and note down the shutter speed, do the same again but point your AF point at a suitable shadow in your image. You should now have 3 shutter speeds. Step 3. Switch to manual mode and set your aperture to what you chose in step 2, compose your photo, then take a picture with your first shutter speed value. Now take 2 more images with the other two shutter speed values making sure the camera doesn't move between images. Step 4. (This process differs slightly between HDR software so I can only give a brief tutorial) open your HDR software and choose the three images of different exposures, choose the option to merge them. Step 5. You will now have a not very pleasing image, don't worry this is just because the full dynamic range can't be displayed by your monitor. Convert your image to a 16 bit image using tone-mapping. Your image should now look quite impressive, if done right you should notice the immense detail compared to a normal photograph. If you wish to save your image as a JPEG image you will have to further convert it to an 8 bit image. You can see an example of a HDR photograph at the bottom of this Intel. |
