The principles of exposure
Badly exposed images are one of the biggest pitfalls of the amateur photographer. Exposure is a measure of detail in the highlights and the shadows, an under exposed image will have high detail in highlights but little or no detail in the shadows, therefore an over exposed image will have little to no detail in the highlights but lots of detail in the shadows. When an image is over badly over exposed the highlights are known to be "burnt out", if an image has burn out highlights, the highlights will be pure white with no detail. Exposure is measured in "stops" the standard range of stops on a camera LCD is -2 to +2, where 0 is in the middle, 0 is known as "perfect exposure" (most of the time). I will know let you into a little known secret amongst professional photographers, always try to under expose your image by -1/3 stops (the stop before 0), this will give you lightly more detail in your highlights, it is much easier to recover detail from shadows than it is from highlights. Please take a close look at the images at the bottom, there is an under exposed, over exposed and a perfectly exposed image. All photographs in my Intel are taken by me, please do not use them in any way apart from to study and learn from. Now you know the basics of exposure, so go practice and enjoy photography. Good luck! |
