The relationship between shutter speed and aperture
Before reading this Intel I recommend you read my Intel on shutter speed and aperture as a basic knowledge of shutter speed and aperture is needed to understand this Intel. I also recommend you read my Intel on exposure, as this will help you greatly when reading this Intel. As a basic rule of thumb, the smaller your aperture the slower your aperture must be to reach a suitable exposure. This rule also applies in reverse, therefore, the wider your aperture, the faster your shutter speed must be in order to reach a suitable exposure To put it in number terms, say for example I want to use a wide aperture of f4.2 in order to achieve an out of focus background, considering its a sunny day I would have to use a very fast shutter speed of around 1/800 in order to achieve a suitable exposure, of course this will greatly differ depending on your lighting conditions. A good way to make sure you always achieve the right shutter speed in relation to your aperture is to use the aperture priority mode on your camera, in this mode your camera will automatically work out the right shutter speed based on your chosen exposure. This mode will be represented on most camera models as Av or A (not auto mode). If you wish to control your shutter speed directly you should be using the shutter priority mode on your camera, when using this your camera will automatically work out a suitable aperture for your chosen shutter speed. This mode will normally be labelled Tv, Sv or S depending on your camera make and model. Learn to use aperture and shutter speed to your advantage by practising regularly. Good Luck. |
