What is ISO and how it effects Noise in you photos
ISO (pronounced I-Sow) is the the measure of how sensitive your cameras sensor is to light entering the lens. Some people and some cameras refer to ISO as "Sensitivity", The standard ISO range on a mid-level DSLR is 100-1600 although this varies greatly between camera makes and models some cameras can even go down to 50 ISO and up to 10,000 ISO but you usually pay very high prices for these "pro" SLRs. The lower the ISO number the less sensitive your camera's sensor is to light, therefore high ISO values such as 800+ are commonly used at night time, when your subject is too far away to use the flash and you don't have a tripod to use long shutter speeds or your subject is moving. It is all very well increasing ISO to take pictures in dark conditions but increasing ISO also increase the amount of noise in your photograph, noise is like grain, lots of miscellaneous pixels all over your photo, which, most of the time doesn't look very good. The amount of noise on your photos at high ISO values differs between cameras and greatly depends on the size of the sensor, therefore compact cameras will suffer from noise much more than SLRs, the amount of noise also depends slightly on the post processing done by the camera, a lot of modern cameras have noise reduction settings that can be quite effective. A great program for removing noise from your photographs is "Noise Ninja" it removes most noise from photographs without destroying detail and I highly recommend it. I have not gone into great detail about ISO in this Intel as I will do that in a later Intel I am working on, this Intel is more focused on how ISO effects noise and how to reduce noise. There is an example of a non noisy and a noisy picture at the bottom of this Intel. All images in this intel are taken by me, please only use them to study and learn from |
